What really is Dashain? Why such a fuss about this?

Dashain (Bijaya Dashami) is the 15-day biggest national festival of Nepal which is celebrated with much enthusiasm in the country or even worldwide. While all the offices and organizations get closed, people from all corners of the world return back home to celebrate this festival together with family and friends. This year, Dashain has fallen on the last week of September.

Significance:

Generally, Dashain symbolizes the victory of good over evil. As in Hindu mythology, the demon Mahishasura had created havoc in Devaloka (gods residence) but Durga killed the demon. The first 9 days symbolize the ongoing battle which took place and the 10th day, the victory of Durga over demon.

What do people do in Dashain?

  • Flying Decorative Kites and try to cut each others strings of the kite which gets quite fun especially among children.
  • Homes are properly cleaned and decorated as people believe doing so will show the path to mother goddess to enter the home and bless with good luck.
  • Swinging in the temporary bamboo built swings, erected up to 30 ft is the main attraction, either rotary wheels or ling ping.
  • Putting Tika on the forehead and garlands of flowers over the neck is the long run custom and tradition. Tika marks the good harvesting of crops during last harvest.
  • Singing, dancing, eating delicacies and drinking
  • Playing card for fun and money
  • Attending fairs and different forms of entertainment

What do tourists can do?

  • Live with the local family, breathe with them and follow their daily lifestyles step by step and day by day
  • Observe Dashain procession in the mountainous village and be a part of it
