Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo Lake Trekking an amazing journey a combination of culture with incredible scenery of landscapes and mountains where one can enjoy visiting at turquoise and emerald Phoksundo Lake before heading over the highest point of this adventure at Jeng-La 5,090 meters with fabulous views of mountains and of Dolpo rolling hills and valley.

Starting with super flight to Nepalgunj and then with another scenic flight to reach at Dolpo region, where this adventure starts with a visit of picturesque Phoksundo Lake with Ringmo village explore ancient Bon and Buddhist culture, walk leads on the barren windswept terrain with amazing views of red rock formation walls high cliffs in the backdrop of high snow capped mountains.
Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo trek passes through several interesting villages of continues to a high pass of Baga La 5,070m and Jeng la at 5,090 meters reaching impressive villages of Tokyu and Dho Tarap and to Tarakot a nice village with a monastery, from here slowly this awesome adventure concludes at Jhupal with a flight back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj after a wonderful adventure to Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo lake with great service of Sherpa Nomads and its friendly crews and guides.

Return journey leads back to Jhupal after visiting interesting villages of Saldang, Yangze Gompa, Tokyu Gaon, Tarakot and Dunai after crossing Baga-la and Jeng-la high passes for the flight back to Kathmandu after a most amazing and incredible experience around Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo Lake with Nepal Adventure Team.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01:Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Day 02:Morning sightseeing tour afternoon fly to Nepalgunj.

Day 03:Fly to Jhupal 2,320 m then trek to Dunai 2,850m – 03 hrs.

Day 04:Trek to Ankhe 2,896m - 06 hrs.

Day 05:Trek to Sumdu / Sulighat village 3,500m -06 hrs.

Day 06:Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,500 m - 05 hours.

Day 07:Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion.

Day 08:Cross Baga La 5,070m and to Phedi 4,470m - 07 hrs.

Day 09:Trek and cross Numa-la 5,190 m and to Phedi - 08 hrs.

Day 10:Trek to Tokyu Gaon 4,200m via Jeng la 5,090 m - 06 hrs.

Day 11:Trek to Dho Tarap 4,040 m - 05 hrs.

Day 12:Trek to Tarap Khola (Kamekharka) 3,800m - 07 hrs.

Day 13:Trek to Kharigaon 3,150m - 05 hours.

Day 14:Trek to Tarakot 2,850 m - 05 hrs.

Day 15:Trek to Dunai 2,850 m and drive to Jhupal 2, 320 m - 01 hr.

Day 16:Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel.

Day 17:In Kathmandu free day with sightseeing tour.

Day 18:International departure for home ward bound.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel. At Kathmandu Tribhuvan international airport received by Nepal Adventure Team staff for transfer to respective hotels, after refreshment our guide will brief regarding hotel, Kathmandu and Lower Dolpo and Phoksundo Lake Trekking.

Day 02Morning sightseeing tour afternoon fly to Nepalgunj. Morning our city guide will receive you for a tour around Kathmandu visiting places of interest. Kathmandu Valley is renowned steeped with World Heritage Sites the holy Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath( Little Tibet), Swayambhunath ( Monkey Temple) and monasteries, ancient Kings Palaces and courtyard in Kathmandu; after an interesting sightseeing tour return back to hotel. Afternoon depart for Lower Dolpo trek, a scenic flight of 50 mins to Nepalgunj, located close to India border then transfer to respective hotels for overnight stop.

Day 03Fly to Jhupal 2,320 m then trek to Dunai 2,850m – 03 hrs. After early breakfast transfer to Nepalgunj airport for a short flight to Jhupal in Dolpo, on reaching Dolpo meet our trekking staff and trek to Dunai for overnight stop, walk leads through interesting farm villages and farm lands with views of snow capped peaks in the distance in Jhupal in the comfort of nice lodge.

Day 04Trek to Ankhe 2,896m - 06 hrs. After an interesting time in Dunai, walk leads through the market and then crossing the bridge over Thulo Bheri River and then a climb towards a ridge of Phoksundo River valley with super views of Kagmara peak, from here trekking leads to a descend passing several spread out houses with walnut trees close to a stream to reach at Dhera a small cattle herders settlements, a short climb brings to Rahagaon village of Thakuri, a Hindu people, then taking a downhill path into thick forest, reaching our first overnight camp at Ankhe, a small village and the entrance to Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Day 05Trek to Sumdu / Sulighat village 3,500m -06 hrs. From Ankhe morning walk leads to short ascend and descend through forest to reach a river bank, and then climb to a ridge on leaving the forest high above the river, from the top walk downhill leading upstream to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, and then heading further to Sumdu near Sulighat village for overnight camp.

Day 06Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,500 m - 05 hours. Morning walk leads into a Phoksundo and Pungmo Khola (stream) valley to cross west bank of Phoksundo Khola following Pungmo Khola, from here walking downhill into pine and birch tree lines to reach at upper side of the river / stream, after a pleasant stop continue walk to reach Ringmo village, an interesting, attractive Tibetan style village with mud plastered chortens and Mani (prayer) walls, from here a short distance walk to Phoksundo Lake for overnight camp by the shore of emerald Phoksundo Lake.

Day 07Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion. A perfect place for free and rest day, just relax and marvel the beautiful views of peaks and landscapes and explore interesting Ringmo village.

Day 08Cross Baga La 5,070m and to Phedi 4,470m - 07 hrs. After an enjoyable and interesting time at Ringmo village and Phoksundo lake, walk leads to other side of Dolpo area heading east by an alternative way crossing few passes, walking on a pleasant trail leading uphill to cross over Baga-la at 5,070 meters. A steep climb for 3 hours to reach a the top offering super panorama of Phoksundo lake and Kagmara peaks, after a nice stop walk leads to a long descend to overnight camp at phedi (bottom of the hill).

Day 09Trek and cross Numa-la 5,190 m and to Phedi - 08 hrs. From here morning walk leads to another pass at Numa-la at 5,190 meters, the highest spot of this awesome trip, walk leads to a climb on the nice grassy slopes for about three hours then reaching the top of Numa-la with impressive views of snow capped mountains from Dhaulagiri mountain range to Kagmara peak and looking down at beautiful valleys and surrounding dramatic landscapes, after an enjoyable moment descend to the base of the pass, then walk on gradual path to overnight camp on summer pasture.

Day 10Trek to Tokyu Gaon 4,200m via Jeng la 5,090 m - 06 hrs. After days in isolation away from villages, today’s walk leads to an interesting village at Tokyu Gaon one of the largest village of this region, morning starts with a steep climb for two hours to the top of Jeng-la with grand views of snow capped mountains with Mt. Dhaulagiri North Face, on enjoying the fantastic views, then descend towards Tarap valley, which is one of the longest beautiful green valley extending about 20 k.m along Tarap Chu River, with more than 10 villages with well tended farm fields, monasteries and chortens. Overnight stop at Tokyugaon, an interesting village with old monastery, afternoon visit the monastery or just relax and observe the local with farming activities.

Day 11Trek to Dho Tarap 4,040 m - 05 hrs. Morning walk follows downhill path towards Tarap Chu into a wide valley, with temporary settlements of local cattle herders, the people here belongs to both Bon Pa and Chaiba sects of Tibetan Buddhism (Mahayana) living together in harmony. After a nice walk on this beautiful valley reaching at Dho Tarap for overnight camp, afternoon with time for local visit around village inhabited by Tibetans origin people and Magar hill tribe.

Day 12Trek to Tarap Khola (Kamekharka) 3,800m - 07 hrs. A long day walk with moderate trail with few short up and down hills, morning starts with a descent into a wide valley which further narrows into a gorge. Following the path with sparse vegetation of juniper and wild rose bushes which is typical in this dry barren area of inner Himalaya climate and arctic temperate zone, around this place chances of spotting some wild life including herds of blue sheep’s, after a great enjoyable walk reaching at the junction of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, flowing from Tarap River beyond east, source of the river from the glacier of North West Dhaulagiri Himalayan range of mountains. After a pleasant walk reaching a summer pasture called Kamekharka, the word Kharka meaning shelter of the Sheppard’s.

Day 13Trek to Kharigaon 3,150m - 05 hours. After a nice morning in this wonderful area, trek leads towards Tarap River and into a gorge, rising above from the path built on steep slopes. This narrow gorge offers some challenge and with an adventure as the path in some places with damaged broken bridge by river floods, and sometimes wading across the chilly river on foot, after some adventure and excitement this fine day walk reaches at Tarap- khola near Kharigaon for overnight camping.

Day 14Trek to Tarakot 2,850 m - 05 hrs. Adventure carry’s on reaching the end of lower Dolpo area through Lalberi village and then back into tree lines on the trail following the river again downstream to Tarakot village. (over hundred years ago, before the Gorkha dynasty, this beautiful and interesting village was the capital and had Dzong meaning Fort). Tarakot village houses famous Sandul Gompa, located on the confluence of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chum after an interesting detour and visit of Tarakot village, walking down away from the village to overnight camp by the river and close to a monastery at the edge of a grassy plateau, with an interesting solitary tree.

Day 15Trek to Dunai 2,850 m and drive to Jhupal 2, 320 m - 01 hr. This wonderful journey slowly comes to an end at Jhupal, the gateway to Dolpo and many other destinations of far west region, starting final day walk to Dunai following several scattered farm villages and cattle herders shades and huts, then leading to a gradual uphill to a valley and descend to barren treeless landscapes at Thulo Bheri valley at Dunai area, from here walking past a hospital to cross a new suspension bridge to reach at Dunai town, a large town an administrative headquarter of Dolpo district. From here reach Jhupal on time taking a jeep ride for an hour drive on the dirt rough road to Jhupal for the last and final overnight stop of this impressive adventure.

Day 16Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel. Morning as schedule short flight to Nepalgunj after a time here transfer to connecting flight back to Kathmandu after a wonderful and amazing time in the wild west of Nepal around Dolpo.

Day 17In Kathmandu free day with sightseeing tour. Nepal Adventure reserves this day as contingency in case of flight delay and cancellation at Jhupal which might occur sometime due to unfavorable bad weather conditions, if all goes as per the planned itinerary relax for individual activities or last day shopping souvenirs, or one can book for another interesting tour around Kathmandu-Bhaktapur and Patan.

Day 18International departure for home ward bound. Last day in amazing Nepal as per international flight time NAT staff transfer you to airport for your flight back home or to next port of call, after a great and remarkable adventure to Lower Dolpo trekking with grand and wonderful service of Nepal Adventure Team its guides and staff.
