Nepal Adventure Teams “Pilgrimage tour to Kailash Mansarovar” is a journey of lifetime experience as this trip leads to the top of worlds highest and largest plateau, surrounded with beautiful high peaks and amazing landscapes within amazing old Tibetan Buddhist culture of South West Tibet.

This trip starts with a scenic and interesting drive from Kathmandu with superb panorama of mountains that borders Nepal and Tibet. Besides being holy it is also an incredible mountain of outmost beauty, with four grand faces representing jewels, as eastern face believed as crystal, the western ruby, the southern sapphire and northern gold. This interesting and holy journey includes stopover at sacred and beautiful Lake Manasarover around Kailash area from here well head for holy walk / kora or circumambulation around the holy mountain Kailash.

The walk involves climb over highest point (holy spot) of Droma-la pass 5,470 m and towards Lamchu valley visiting Zutulpuk holy cave where 11th century saint Milereppa(a poet and guru) traveled around this area in search of Nirvana. After a tough holy walk getting back to Darchen town, return journey is back to Kathmandu after a memorable Pilgrimage tour to Kailash Mansarovar with the excellent service of Nepal Adventure Team and its staffs.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01:Arrival in Kathmandu 1350m

Day 02:Drive from Kathmandu to Nylam 3,450 m after Zhangmu (2,300 m)-160 Kms - 07 hrs.

Day 03:Rest day at Nylam for acclimatization with short hike.

Day 04:Drive to Saga 4,400m -05 hrs.

Day 05:Drive to Paryang -06 hrs.

Day 06:Drive to Horpa eastern side of Manasarover 4,550m- 06 hrs.

Day 07:Acclimatization and Rest Day at Manasarover.

Day 08:Drive to Tarboche via Darchen 4,600m and begin walk to Dhiraphuk 4,900 m - 05 hrs.

Day 09:Trek to Zutul-Puk 4,760m - 06 hours.

Day 10:Trek to Darchen and drive near Maium-la.

Day 11:Retrace the drive back to Saga via Paryang.

Day 12:Drive to Nylam – 05 hrs.

Day 13:Drive to Kathmandu via Kodari - 06 hrs.

Day 14:Flight back to sweet home

Detail Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu 1350mWe welcome you to the holy land Nepal where there's countless of temples, stupas, monuments and other religious sites. After receiving you at the airport, we'll take you to the beautiful Thamel for the rest of the day where you can explore the local market and rest in the luxury of the quality hotel.

Day 02Drive from Kathmandu to Nylam 3,450 m after Zhangmu (2,300 m)-160 Kms - 07 hrs. Early morning departure from hotel to start this fantastic Overland to Mt. Kailash as the drive leads to Kodari (Tibet/Nepal border) through scenic countryside. At Kodari, after completion of immigration formalities head towards Zhangmu where our Tibetan guide will receive and again going through Tibetan / Chinese visa and passport formalities, and then continue drive to Nylam (3,600m) as time permits which is 2 hrs drives on winding uphill road. Overnight in a guesthouse or lodge and having meals across the road restaurant where Chinese, Nepali and Tibetan foods available.

Day 03Rest day at Nylam for acclimatization with short hike. A necessary and important to have rest day at this altitude before heading to Kailash area, at Nylam for acclimatization, from here onward tree lines disappear. From Nylam starts the Tibetan plateau, a world’s highest and largest windswept and arid plateau. In Nylam there are few places where one can take a short walk the best is visit the Milereppa cave and its monastery just an hour walk on route Laylung pass, Milereppa a11th Centaury saint known for his good preaching, poet, folk songs and miracles performance.

Day 04Drive to Saga 4,400m -05 hrs. Morning starting after breakfast for the s journey on Tibetan windswept landscape, today passing through two high passes of Lalung-La at 5,050m with great view of Shishapangma 8,013m-Gaurishanker 7,134m, Langtang 7,234m with other mountain range, drive continues with a brief stop through villages, farm fields and Nomads camps. Drive heads south west towards remote corners of Tibet finally ends at the Saga town.

Day 05Drive to Paryang -06 hrs. Starting earlier past Saga in complete wilderness, after few hour drive climbs to a pass then descending to long stretch of Tibetan plains, with great views of peaks. The drive passes few villages after every few hours of this scenic drive and then reaching a windswept village at Paryang. Paryang at approx 4,550m is a village of 15-20 houses mainly serving as Guest houses and Lodge, where the facilities are very simple and basic.

Day 06Drive to Horpa eastern side of Manasarover 4,550m- 06 hrs. Morning drive leads to more arid and dry country with few stops passing through some small villages and nomads camps, continue journey over Mayam-la at 5,150m to reach the shore of holy Lake Manasarover for overnight stop.

Day 07Acclimatization and Rest Day at Manasarover. Rest day for acclimatization and short walk Manasarover, a sacred lake located between Mt. Kailash 6,714m and the Gurla Mandhata mountain range at 7,694 m. Manasarover floats beneath the shadow of holy Kailash as the lake formed in the mind of Gods. The best time to circle Manasarover is in late autumn and early spring when the streams and rivers flowing into the lake are low. It is then possible to walk very near the shoreline. An optional circuit or parikrama on drive trip around Manasarover Lake can be done on request which takes about 5 hrs.

Day 08Drive to Tarboche via Darchen 4,600m and begin walk to Dhiraphuk 4,900 m - 05 hrs. After a wonderful rest at holy Manasarover Lake, a short drive to Darchen town with hotels and guesthouses, this town busy with pilgrims during auspicious time for parikrama / kora (circumambulation). Darchen start and end point of holy walk, drive leads North West at holy spot Tarboche where the walk begins with view of Mt. Kailash West Face. Kailash (6,714m.), the heart of ancient Shangshung kingdom supposed country of pre-Buddhist Bonpos origin. After 4 hrs walks brings you at Diraphuk Gompa for overnight stop in a simple lodge.

Day 09Trek to Zutul-Puk 4,760m - 06 hours. After Dhiraphuk, morning walk on gradual path for a while and then climb to reach at the top called Dromo-la the highest point of the journey and a holy spot at 5,470m /18,525ft. A big boulder represents the goddess Dolma or Dromo (Tara) festooned with prayer flags. This spot is the physical and spiritual high point of pilgrimage. From here descend to the bottoms of the hill and walk to Zutul-Puk Gompa for overnight stop, Zuthul means cave. The place is named after a cave in which the poet, saint Milarepa stayed meditating. His footprint still remains on the roof.

Day 10Trek to Darchen and drive near Maium-la. Last day of holy walk ‘kora’ or parikrama, starts with an easy walk of 3 hours on a broad plain passing many mani walls, then coming to a narrow valley with short section of gorge as the route turns towards west to Darchen, the last leg of the walk make a dramatic exit from the river valley on to the plain the walk passes to a mani walls decorated with carved yak skulls. A short walk from here brings you to the windswept little township at Darchen and end of this great walk, from here drive back near Maium-la around Lake Manasarover for overnight stop.

Day 11Retrace the drive back to Saga via Paryang. A long drive today to reach at Saga town via Paryang, retracing journey on same route for 6-7 hours of overland drive to Saga for overnight stop.

Day 12Drive to Nylam – 05 hrs. From Saga drive back to Nylam for last overnight stop in Tibet.

Day 13Drive to Kathmandu via Kodari - 06 hrs. Drive from Nylam to Zhangmu town as per Chinese Beijing Standard Time (of 2:15 mins ahead than Nepal standard time) going through passport and visa formalities then a short drive to Friendship Bridge which separates Tibet / China and Nepal territory. Here farewell to our Tibetan guides and drivers and taking another vehicle for the drive back to Kathmandu, at Kathmandu transfer to respective hotels after a fabulous and great trip Overland to Mt. Kailash with great service of Nepal Adventure Team.

Day 14Flight back to sweet homeWe will bid you farewell today wishing you nice journey back home.

Passport & Visa

All foreign nationals, except Indian citizens, need visas to enter Nepal. Getting a visa must be the easiest one though. You just have to go to the Nepalese Embassy/consulate in your country or it can also be obtained upon your arrival in Kathmandu International Airport. To get a visa, you need to bring 2 pp size photos, visa fees and valid passport.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a must when you travel abroad. Therefore before you come to Nepal, please make sure you have your insurance documents with you since our insurance companies cannot insure foreign nationals. Because of the reason that they cover all the expenses if you face some unfortunate happenings and you have to be rescued or medically assisted during the trip or if your belongings are lost or stolen.

Solo Travellers

We have arranged for the single traveller to pay for the single trip only. He has to share the accommodation with other person of same sex though while he can also join the other groups.


Foods and Accommodations

All meals are provided during trek while only breakfast will be available in Kathmandu. There will also be welcome and farewell dinner for guests in Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, youll be staying in the best quality hotel basically in 3 stars, on twin-sharing basis. On trekking, accommodations are simple yet comfortable on mountain lodges. Toilets and bathrooms need to be shared in some lodges.

Note: Single room is always available but only on special request and spending extra bucks.


Health and Fitness required

No previous experience is required since its a moderate trek. But you being a healthy person, physically and mentally is very important. It is better if we prepare ourselves few days/weeks prior to the start of the trek by jogging and running regularly since well be walking a lot of ups and downs in the hills, ridges, villages and mountains. Participants with the pre-existing medical conditions should inform us beforehand.

First Aid Kit/High Altitude Sickness

Nepal Adventure Team strongly suggests that you have your own personal first aid or medical kit. This trip takes you to some heights within few days but the slow walks and regular stops between the walks will help you acclimatize on high altitude saving you from the high altitude sickness called AMS(acute mountain sickness). Gaining altitude without proper consideration of AMS is fatal.

Your Guide and Porter

Since the mountain trekking take you to the remote places over high altitudes, the leader should have a significant knowledge in the field so that he can wonderfully and safely lead you there clearing any obstacles on the way. We,Nepal Adventure Team can proudly say that our guides are highly qualified for the role. They are fully  trained, experienced and licensed. They have undergone through a whole lot of trainings to make themselves useful in various situations and to make your journey a smooth and pleasant one.

Our porters are always fully equipped with the gears they need and as per the company policy, they are always insured and completely looked after. They are our backbone. We allow maximum weight of 25kg to be carried by one porter. We make sure that they are well paid and well treated.

Best Time to Travel

The best time for trekking to the Kailash Mansarovar is Spring(March to May) and Autumn(September to November) because the weather is warm and  moderate while the view and visibility is the best. The winter and the summer is the less frequented times because of the cold and the monsoon rain respectively.

Equipments and Packing Lists

After booking with Nepal Adventure Team, please pack necessary items as listed:
1. Travel documents: passport, visa(if you have), travel insurance, air tickets, voucher, passport photo (x 2)
2. Bank card or credit cards, travellers cheque, etc
3. Comfortable boots and runners/sports shoes.
4. 6-8 pairs of socks woolen / cotton.
5. Fleece jacket, Down / Duvet Jacket and Rain / windproof jacket.
6. Gloves- 2 pairs.
7. T-shirts 4-6 pcs, shirts(woolen/cotton).
8. A cap for day and a woolen hat or Balaclava for evening / morning wear.
9. Trousers.
10. Short and tracksuits.
11. Sleeping bag (4 seasons)  with inner liner.

Precautionary Note

Trekking has been long established in Nepal,so the itineraries are modified and moderated in such a way that you can take it easy and slow. DO NOT RUSH AND ENJOY. There is plenty of time and guide will keep track of you all the time. It might be a bit harder or a bit more colder but you will get used to it.


Additional Money

Every traveller is different and they spend their own way. Some spend on food and drinks while other on souvenirs. Either way, consider your own spending habits and also tipping, emergency fund($200), etc before you pack up and leave.

Trip Specific Safety

Your guide is always there for your safety concerns and looking after your valuables. But you have to be equally careful. Carry some sort of wallet or belt for your important documents and money. The hotels have the safety deposit box where the lock is recommended before passing the luggage.

Possession or using ofany illegal drugs is totally intolerable. Its because of the law that respects the local people and their culture. The group will be expelled in such case.

The groups safety is very important for us. Please note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Even though every effort is made to go as planned, a little change might occur in the itinerary because of weather conditions, health condition of a person, unexpected natural disasters, etc. The leader will try to ensure the trip runs as planned, but please be prepared to be flexible just in case.
